Did
your organisation shed staff in the economic downturn? Perhaps you've
asked staff to share the pain and work fewer hours in return for everyone
staying in work and your organisation not losing its valuable corporate
memory.
Did you know there is emerging evidence that 30-40% of the
market value of an organisation is attributable to intangible factors including
human resources strategy execution and attracting and retaining talent (Holtom,
2008)?.
One
way to keep your talent is through asking your employees what is important to
them, particularly when it comes to performance appraisal. Insights
generated from my post graduate research on this topic were revealing and
included:

groups
of people who are appraised as individuals yet who have team goals to meet
are not usually asked what performance appraisal criteria are important
either for them as individuals, or for their team.

Appraising
the performance of mature teams where people know each other and have worked
together for some time is different to that of teams formed quickly to respond
to an issue (eg emergency response, project bids, juries).

People
in the latter situation often don't know each other and have to work out roles and responsibilities
under stress. So management expectations ought to vary accordingly - but
often managers aren't aware of this.
